Shanghai, June 17, 2012 – This weekend the Shanghai International Circuit hosted the 2012 Ferrari Racing Days in Shanghai, an annual event organised by Ferrari Greater China, with the third round of the Asia Pacific Ferrari Challenge as one of its highlights.
Competitors in the Ferrari series were back at this fascinating track, which apart from being the home of the F1 GP, also hosted the second round of the one-make series APAC Challenge in April. On that occasion the racing was exciting and very competitive. Adding to the interest of the weekend Racing Days was the presence of about 150 owners at a track parade, who were able to run their Ferraris on track with the help from professional instructors, who during the on track sessions explained to the drivers how to get the most out of the performance of their cars through driving in completely safe conditions. Ferrari also invited hundreds of fans to the paddock area to have first-hand experience of Ferrari racing culture and what the brand stands for.
Around 30,000 enthusiastic spectators packed the grandstands to watch a truly unique spectacle, which included a display of cars from the complete Ferrari current range. The highlights of the current models included the new F12 berlinetta, the most powerful high performance Ferrari of all time and the Ferrari California 30, which weighs 30 kilos less and 30 horsepower more. It makes a significant improvement to the power to weight ration of one of the best selling cars ever made. At the Ferrari Racing Days, one can also see the special edition of the 458 Italia which was dedicated to the 20 years anniversary of Ferrari in China. This model, with a unique livery, features Chinese characters and painted in the new colour, “Rosso Marco Polo,” developed specifically for this car and was shown to the public for the first time. Other limited edition on display at the grand celebration event also included Enzo, 599 Alonso Edition and SA Aperta and some of the jewels from the past, including the legendary 1984 Testarossa.
The highlight of the Sunday was the third race of 2012 APAC Challenge with 33 drivers. Victory in Race 1 of the Trofeo Pirelli went to Hisamori HAYASHI (Japan) ahead of Philippe PRETTE (Italy) and Pasin LATHOURAS (Thailand). As for the gentleman drivers in the Coppa Shell, Paul van LOENHOUT (Australia) took the win, crossing the line ahead of Xin JIANG (China) and Junhan ZHU (China). In the afternoon race counting towards the Asia Pacific series, Philippe PRETTE (Italy) had the measure of the field, beating Pasin LATHOURAS (Thailand) and Steve WYATT (Australia), into second and third respectively. Coming out on top in the Coppa Shell Race 2 was Eric CHEUNG (Canada) with Junhan ZHU (China) second and Francis Hideki ONDA (Japan).
The next round of the APAC series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli takes place from 31 August to 2 September at the Sepang circuit, when another fascinating contest can be expected at the demanding Malaysian track.
